Any form of spiritual practice is simply the Self trying to know itself. We must simply gift ourselves the right to ask any question of ourselves objectively, then make a vow to answer with the most absolute honesty available in that moment.
This is not as easy as it sounds as the act of asking any question is requiring a position that is separate and more desirable than the position you currently refer to as "I", so asking objectively is then a very difficult thing to accomplish as you must have a preference in order to ask a question. You soon find that the key is not ridding yourself of desires or preferences in general but instead asking a better quality of question that may require less attachment.
This will change with how honest you are with yourself or as your idea of self changes with growth...
